Embracing peace as a person with CKD

Dealing with chronic diseases can be challenging, not just for you but also for your loved ones. Frankly, it’s not an easy diagnosis. But, as the new year unfolds, it is good to reflect and make some decisions.

One of the things that comes to mind is how you can embrace peace within yourself. Of course, there will be times when life feels overwhelming. Especially on days when things don’t go the way they should. Or when you find yourself increasingly dependent on people. Or perhaps, when people around you treat you less nicely or respectfully than you deserve.

Take a deep breath.

At every point in time, remember to take care of yourself. That means taking care of your physical and mental health. Sometimes, dwelling on all the things going wrong only makes you feel worse. An uptight, angry, and tense mind is unhelpful. Of course, you will feel this way sometimes. You’re human! Just don’t let it take too much of your time.

Talking is one way we can embrace peace. You can find trusted people to share how you feel. And when your loved ones don’t seem to understand you, pause and see if you can find the right words to share how you feel or how they have hurt you without being hurtful yourself.

When your healthcare providers seem to rush you, let them know you have some questions and concerns. This is the year to advocate for yourself if you’re not already doing that. When going for hospital visits, you could prepare your questions beforehand so you remember them. It would also help you get the best from your hospital visits.

This year, I want to encourage you to embrace peace within yourself. Protect your peace. Do not allow people or events to disrupt it too much. I write too much because I don’t want you to beat yourself up if your peace gets disrupted.

And you know what? You may not be able to do this all by yourself. It’s okay to get professional help.

Surround yourself with things that boost your inner peace. Music, journaling, walks, movies… The list is endless, and you’re the only one who knows what is best for you.

For the rest of the year, I need your help. What topics would you like Kidneyline to cover? Drop a comment or send a message to [email protected]
